If your QFT doesnt have a choke it probably has a 4.5 power valve from the factory. When making adjustments -turn at a time is a good way to proceed. If the engine will idle at 14:1 air/fuel ratio that's really good. If it feels lazy and non responsive to slight changes in the throttle, it may be too rich and will require jetting down. While the gaskets are thick, this still causes sealing problems that can lead to erratic performance. As soon as the engine starts (assuming this is a newly built engine), the engine needs to run at fast idle 1,100 to 1,500 RPM for its initial break-in period. To check manifold vacuum, attach a vacuum gauge to the manifold vacuum port on the carburetor, place foot on brake, engage in gear and record the reading. The change from 6.5" to a 5.5" power valve will most likely be too narrow a change, I'd drop to a 4.5". Let's say you have a 750 double-pumper Holley 0-4779. This warps the carb main body especially near the top of the main body where the main boosters feed from the metering blocks to the main body. So unless youre ready to swap out the carb for a bolt-on fuel injection system, keep that screwdriver handy. This shows the curb idle set with a large exposed portion of the transfer slotthis is bad and will cause not only an overly rich idle mixture but also an off-idle stumble. One of the most overlooked carburetor issues has to do with the secondary throttle opening. The first would be to lower the power valve opening point to 65 (which is stock at 6-1/2 inches Hg) that would open the power valve later when the engine vacuum is lower, with a greater load. On all Holleys there are two power valve channel restrictors (PVCR) that determine the amount of fuel delivered to the boosters over and above the fuel metered by the jets when the power valve opens. Of course, you can also just convert the carb to a 4150 style with the metering block and retain the stock single inlet configuration. The proper way to check fuel pressure is with the engine running at idle with the engine up to full operating temperature. Carburetors are amazing mechanical devices. This enriches the mixture when the engine is under load to maintain the A/F ratio. int & 213 degr. With this carburetor, idle speed adjustments should be done with the bypass adjustment rather than at the throttle speed screw on the linkage. This is near a lean mixture as long as the idle is stable. This increases fuel flow making the idle air/fuel ratio extremely rich. This carb is on a 460 in a 77 f150 4wd manual trans truck. Dalton demonstrates just how simple and easy a carburetor can make your life bolt one on, make a few connections and simple adjustments, and you immediately get excellent throttle response and performance. If the main jets feel right and the engine is too rich under full throttle, then you can also reduce the size of the channel restrictions. Inside the fuel bowl is a brass, hollow plastic or foam plastic float that maintains the fuel level. Harmonic dampers are a component that seems simple on the outside, but theres a lot more to dampers than you might think. The new products include non-stick gaskets, rebuild kits, power valves, needle and seats, and air bleed tuning kits. When changing jet sizes up or down, go two number sizes larger or smaller rather than one to see if it helps or hurts performance. endobj
Do this 2 times. better idle, still a bit rich tho. If the engine is on a test stand (not a dyno) or in a vehicle, you can use a handheld A/F meter with a wideband O2 sensor to measure the A/F ratio in the exhaust. If over, Turn idle mix screws out 1/8 turn. Lightly open the throttle linkage and watch the accelerator pump squirter in the primary venturi. The screw-in power valve channel restrictors act as jets for the power valve circuit. Drivability is just as important, and that requires a lot of air velocity for instant throttle response and good low to mid-range torque. Follow me on. Be careful here to not catch the rubber with the threads of the screws. Note this is an older factory carb with the vent linkage on the primary fuel bowl. A good carburetor tune can make an engine, while a carburetor thats mistuned can literally break an engine. The only way a street small block can handle the extra airflow of a larger carb is if the engine is built and cammed to rev over 7000 RPM and the drivetrain is geared with a higher numerical final drive ratio. According to Murphy, a common Holley with driveability or issues is over-tightening the bowl screws. Make these adjustments turn at a time. This engine, named as part of the X engine family, is uniquely positioned to replace both the L9 and the X12 with the versatility to serve both medium and heavy-duty applications.
